Leonard entered the intellectual property profession in 1997, and has experience in tier-one European and Australasian patent firms, in a university commercialisation company and in a multinational telecommunications company as an R&D engineer.

Leonard understands intellectual property as a patent attorney, as an intellectual property manager and as an engineer having inventions patented. He applies deep insight to protecting technical innovations. His focus is always focussed on getting the patent granted and he enjoys a very high rate of successfully granted patents.

Leonard first became interested in patents at 15 years of age when he invented and drafted a patent for an Improved Supercharger for Internal Combustion Engines. His current technology project is preparing experiments in applying AI to intellectual property in collaboration with computer engineers.

Leonard has recent experience as in-house patent attorney in the commercialisation team at Auckland UniServices Ltd and as the patent attorney liaison for the Return on Sciences ICT and Physical Sciences Committees. In this recent role Leonard managed and developed a large patent portfolio, provided intellectual property support for a number of technology spin-out and licencing operations and managed a number of complex licences.
